AMSU lifts ban on �The Telegraph�

Imphal, January 14: The All Manipur Students' Union has lifted the ban imposed on �The Telegraph� from today after the Editor of the daily based in Guwahati tendered a written apology to the president of the student body.

In a statement, A Shyam Singh, general secretary of the union said that the union lifted the ban after the editor of the daily gave a written statement to the president of the union expressing regret at the report and assured that such distortion of history of the State will not be repeated in the future.

Mention may be made that the student body imposed the ban on the daily following the publication of a report on January 11 by a Delhi based reporter Seema Guha in connection with �June Uprising 2001� against the extension of Centre-NSCN(IM) ceasefire to Manipur.

The student body has also urged all the media including national and regional papers not to publish any distorted report and baseless stories which might fan communal tension in the State.

Calling on the people to stand guard against rumours spread by vested interest people to ignite communal flame, the general secretary urged all the organizations and bodies to refrain from issuing inflammatory report or news through the media.

The union also urged the Government to spell out the details of the talks with NSCN (IM) to the people to clear the apprehensions in the minds of the people.

It also support the peace talks but not at the cost of State integrity.
