Two AR men killed at Phailenkot, Chandel

Imphal, May 02: Two personnel of the 6 Assam Rifles posted at H Phailenkot in Chandel district were killed and four others injured in an ambush undertaken by the proscribed UNLF's armed wing MPA last morning.

Officially confirming the report, the PRO of Assam Rifles in a statement today said that two Riflemen were killed while another four of the 6 Assam Rifles were injured when militants ambushed them in the general area of Phailenkot on May 1 at about 6.30 am.

The deceased Riflemen have been identified as K Tirkey and PT Baskar, said the PRO.

The incident occured while the troops were travelling in a water tanker along with QRT to procure water from Phoilen.

The militants used RPG, Lathode and AK 47 .

The troops retaliated, but the militants managed to escape, added the PRO.

The AR convoy was going to fetch water when they came under intense attack at a spot about 20 kms from H Phailenkot along New Somtal road at about 6.30 am yesterday.

The AR convoy consisted a Gypsy, a water tanker and a 407 mini-truck.

The two AR personnel killed on the spot are identified as driver K Tirkey (32) from Orissa and Rifleman Pagar Pandhari Nath (24) from Maharastra.

The four AR personnel injured in the ambush are undergoing treatment at Leimakhong army hospital.
