Delegates to present Highway issue to Prime Minister

Imphal, September 21: A high power all party delegation comprising of Ministers and 27 representatives of 14 political parties will visit New Delhi on September 23 to apprise the Centre on the frequent disruption and harassment on National Highway 39 and 53 by armed miscreants and to press New Delhi for provision of Highway Protection Force on the route to ensure safety of travelers and goods.

An all party meeting with MPCC president and Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh as the chairman was held today at 8 am wherein it was decided to constitute a team to be deputed to New Delhi to highlight the exact situation on the highways.

The Chief Minister along with some of the members will leave for New Delhi tomorrow, while the rest of the team will reach the national capital on September 23 to highlight the difficulties being faced by people of Manipur while traveling on the highways, especially through NH-39.Prominent leaders of the team include FCS Minister Ph Parijat, DPP president Kh Mani, JD (S) president and former MP W Kulabidhu, BJP vice president Yumjao and general secretary of MPP AK Sanaton.

The meeting also took serious note of the September 5 Piphema incident and condemned the loot and the alleged rape.

Appeals were also made to NH-39 blockade's sponsors to enable vehicles transporting essential commodities to pass through the highway in the general interest of the public.

The meeting also highlighted the futility of continuing indefinite blockade on National Highway-39 as it will not only strain inter-State relation but create inconveniences to transporters considering the deplorable roads of NH-53.At the meeting the Chief Minister pointed out the difficulty of double laning NH-53 due to security reasons.
