Security ready for May 17 polls

Imphal, May 09: With intelligence input hinting at the possibility of armed insurgents stepping up their activities with a vengeance in the wake of the army operation at Sajik Tampak, arrangements have been made to deploy at least 100 armed security personnel in each of the 21 polling stations in Vangai Range and Jiribam Assembly segments of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency where repoll/adjourned poll would be held on May 17.An official source informed that with the Army controlling Sajik Tampak, where camps of the underground activists are located, many underground activists have taken refuge at these areas according to intelligence reports and in view of the history of poll violence in these areas, the step to deploy 100 armed security personnel in each of the 21polling stations was considered.

The date of the adjourned polls/repoll in the 21 polling stations of Vangai and Jiribam Assembly segments was finally fixed on May 17 by the Chief Election Commission of India after the earlier schedule was deferred from security point of view.

The official further informed that most of the companies of Central security personnel which the Election Commission had given its approval for deployment during the polls have arrived.

Twenty companies of BSF and 10 companies of State police forces would be pressed into service for free and fair conduct of the adjourned polls at Vangai Range in Churachandpur district.

No unarmed security personnel would be deployed in any of the 13 polling stations at Vangai Range, the official said.

Informing that the polling and the security personnel would be leaving for their respective destinations by taking the National Highway 53 tomorrow, the official said that polling personnel and polling material for the 13 polling stations in Vangai Range would be airlifted by helicopter when they arrive at Jiribam.

For smooth conduct of repolling at eight polling stations in Jiribam Assembly segment, besides another 20 companies of BSF personne 10 companies of State Police force would be deployed.

Two companies of BSF personnel are already stationing at Jirbam, the source said.
