PWD staff to cease work indefinitely

Imphal, April 01: Strongly condemning the assassination of Assistant Engineer of PWD, K Nabachandra by unidentified gunmen yesterday evening, employees of the PWD have decided to abstain from duty on April 3 and to continue with the cease work strike until and unless the culprits responsible for the heinous murder are booked and punished accordingly.

Significantly the KCP (City Meitei) had yesterday itself claimed that it was responsible for the killing of the Engineer and warned that such strikes will continue.

In a statement issued to the press today, Chief Engineer of PWD G Tonsana Sharma said that the employees of the department held a meeting to condole the demise of the Assistant Engineer and added that the members present observed a two minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

After discussing the heinous murder and strongly condemning it, the employees of PWD decided to stage a dharna tomorrow in front of the PWD complex, Khoyathong to protest the killing.

The meeting also decided that all the employees will abstain from duty on April 3 to protest the and condemn the prevailing law and order situation and the insecure environs in especially for the Engineers and staff of Engineering Departments.

Demanding justice, the meeting also decided that the Engineers of the Department will continue with the cease work strike until and unless the culprits responsible for the killing are booked and a reasonable clarification is obtained from the party concerned.

The PWD Engineers have also appealed to the other Engineering Departments to extend their solidarity to the protest, said the Chief Engineer.

Apart from paying respect to the departed soul, the employees have also extended their heart felt condolence to the bereaved family members.

The late K Nabachandra was attached to the Building Division No.II, PWD and served as an Assistant Engineer.

He was shot dead by the armed miscreants in front of his family members near the gate of his residence at Utlou Kangjeibung Maning Leikai yesterday at about 7.30 pm.
