Organ Donation Day observed at RIMS, Shija

Medical Society of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) observed Indian Organ Donation Day 2023 (Angdaan Mahotsav) cum seminar on "Organ Transplantation" followed by panel discussion on the topic "Organ Transplantation in RIMS; The way forward" at Banting Hall RIMS on Thursday.
Speaking at the observance, RIMS director Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma informed that the institute is one step ahead in extending academic activities compared to other institutes.
Though one of the most premier institutes in entire North East region, transplantation of organ facility is not yet available at RIMS, he conceded while urging all to work hard sp that they could ensure such facility to people and spread knowledge of organ transplant to public.
The observance was also attended by Hospital Medical Superintendent Prof N Sanjib Singh, Prof N Sharat Kumar Singh, Prof Ak Kaku Singh, Prof A Barindra Sharma, Prof S Ranita Devi, Prof Th Suraj Singh, Prof M Birkumar Sharma, Prof Ksh Birendra Singh, Dr L Chaoba Singh, Prof N Sarat Kumar Singh, Dr S Jackison Singh, Dr Kh Somarendra Singh, Dr Anjellica Laiphrakpam, Dr Th Avita Devi and Dr Kh Pradipkumar Singh as panellist, chairpersons and speakers.
Similarly, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute observed Indian Organ Donation Day with an awareness programme on Angdaan Mahotsav, at Shija Auditorium and Shija Academy of Health Sciences (SAHS).
The event was organised in collaboration with the MOHAN Foundation, India, to promote the significance of organ donation and bridge the gap between patients and donors.
Speaking on the occasion, SHRI CMD Dr Palin Khundongbam emphasised that one organ donor could potentially save up to eight lives, and MOHAN Foundation program officer Laishram Monica Devi underscored the grave imbalance between the demand for organ transplants in India and the current number of organ donors.
During the event, Dr Palin handed over a total sum of Rs 1,50,000 to the patient who had undergone renal transplant in June.
The monetary assistance was sponsored by the Transplants Help The Poor Foundation.
It may be noted that Shija Hospitals is recognised as a referral centre by the governments of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh for treatment, including renal transplants.
The hospital has completed 90 living-related kidney transplants successfully, to date, including one ABO-incompatible transplant.
In addition to renal transplants, Shija Hospitals has successfully performed 124 corneal and 2 Cochlear transplants and is soon to commence liver transplantation procedures.
