Landslide victory for Congress
CPI, MPP, BJP, CPI (M), NPP & JD-U draw nil

Imphal, March 06 2012: For the first time in the electoral history of Manipur, Indian National Congress (INC) swept the election to the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly winning 42 seats in the 60-member House.

With this landmark victory, continuation of Congress rule for the third consecutive term has become a foregone conclusion.

In the results of the elections which was declared All India Trinammol Congress won 7 seats, MSCP five seats, NPF four seats, Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) one seat each.

Other major political parties including CPI, MPP, BJP, CPI (M), NPP and JD-U suffered a serious blow with none able to secure any seat.

These political parties formed an alliance to with high hope of defeating the Congress and form a non-Congress government in the state.

The Opposition MPP, which is a regional party, could not open its account this time.

MPP fielded 14 candidates, including its stalwarts O.Joy, party president Nimaichand Luwang and former MP, Th.Chaoba.

O.Joy was defeated by his nearest rival LJP candidate K.Shyam in Langthabal seat.

This is the lone seat won by LJP.

Interestingly, Trinamool Congress, a political party which made successful debut in the last by-election to Konthoujam A/C, got seven seats.

The party contested in 48 constituencies, the second largest number of candidates next to the Congress that fought in all the 60 seats.

Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP), the party which failed to open its account in the last elections, won five seats this time whereas Naga People's Front (NPF), which makes a foray into Manipur politics for the first time, bagged four seats.

Nationalist Congress Party also won one seat.

However, CPI, MPP, BJP, NPP and others could not open their accounts.

NCP president and Opposition leader Radhabinod Koijam, who fought from Thangmeiband constituency, lost the seat to his close rival Trinamool candidate KH.

Joykishan.

Koijam is one of the heavyweights in the fray.

Among the 42 Congress candidates who have come out successful include Chief Minister O Ibobi, MPCC President Gaikhangam, Speaker I Hemochandra, Minister Y Erabot, N Biren, K Ranjit, N Loken, TN Haokip, Phungzathang Tonsing, Th Devendra, Th Lokesore, L Nandakumar, Dr Kh Ratankumar, O Landhoni, K Meghachandra, Dr Ng Bijoy, Md Amin Shah,Ksh Biren, Elangbam Chand, Khundrakpam Debendro, W Brajabidhu, AK Mirabai, RK Anand, Konthoujam Govindas, M Prithviraj,O Landhoni,Md Fajur Rahim, Y Surchandra, D Korungthang, Victor Keishing, NK Preshaw, Yamthong Haokip, Francis Ngajokpa, Ngamthang Haokip, Z Kikhonbou Newmai, Dr Chaltonlien Amo, Vungzagin Valte, T Manga Vaiphei and Ginsuanhao.

The seven successful Trinamool Congress candidates are K Sarat of Konthoujam A/C, Dr I Ibohalbi of Oinam A/C, Th Bishwarjit of Thongju A/C, Th Shyamkumar of Andro A/C, Kh Joykishan of Thangmeiband A/C, O Lukhoi of Wangoi A/C and Maibam Kunjo of Hiyanmglam A/C.The four successful candidates of NPF are Dikho of Mao A/C, Dr V Alexander Pao of Karong A/C, St Nunghlung Victor of Chandel A/C and Samuel Risom of Ukhrul A/C.The five successful candidates of MSCP are RK Imo of Sagolband A/C, Karam Thamarjit of Keirao A/C, Paonam Brojen of Wangjing Tentha A/C, Nemcha Kipgen of Kangpokpi A/C and Janghemlung Panmei of Tamenglong A/C.The lone successful candidates of NCP and LJP are respectively Laishom Ibomcha of Keishamthong A/C and Karam Shyam of Langthabal A/C.Among the successful 60 candidates, 25 of them are new faces while nine others have won in the election last as well.

Among the candidates who have snuffed by the voters, 22 of them are sitting MLAs.

They include political heavyweights of MPP like O Joy, party President Dr Nimaichand Luwang, Vice President Th Chaoba and Dr L Chandramani.

Sitting MLA Radhabinod Koijam lost in the hands of Kh Joykishan, new candidate of Trinamool Congress.

Health and Family Welfare Minister L Jayentakumar, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Md Allaudin Khan and Education Minister DD Thaisii were among the candidates of Congress who lost the elections.

CPI candidate Ph Parijat who was the Minister for Agriculture and N Mangi, Chairman MANIDCO and State Secretary Dr M Nara also lost the election.
