Manipur continue medal rush on Day 3 of NE Games

Imphal, November 12 2022: Manipur's medal count swelled to 36 after they continued their good run on the third day of the 2nd North East Olympic Games 2022 at Shillong, Meghalaya.

The state team's strong showing on Saturday yielded four gold, six silver and seven bronze medals, taking their tally to 36 .

Manipur made their mark in wushu on Day 3 of the Games by winning two individual gold medals.

Salam Marshal Singh won the men's taolu event after beating Assam's Tonmoy Boro while Meghalaya's Kyrshanbor R Songthiang and Arunachal Pradesh's Pongchoi Reham shared the third spot for bronze.

Yumlembam Echantombi Devi was the other gold medallist for Manipur.

Echantombi bested Arunachal Pradesh's Yani Eru in their final duel in the women's taolu event as ES Songthiang (Arunachal) and Nistha Dutta (Assam) settled for bronze medals.

It was another productive day for state swimmers as they rounded off the Saturday's competition with one gold, four silver and three bronze medals.

Sarungbam Athouba Meitei did the state proud by securing the gold medal in the men's 50m backstroke individual event where Jananjoy Jyoti Hazarika and Aditya Thapa, both from Assam, finished second and third.

Ningombam Jeson Meitei (100m breastroke) and Laitonjam Jessica Chanu (50m backstroke) claimed silver medals in their respective events.

Both state men's and women's team also did their bit with silver medal each as the men's team composed of Sarungbam Athouba Meitei, Sandham Punshiba Meitei, Kshetrimayum Debraj Singh and Ningombam Jeson Metei finished second in the men's 4x50m medley relay while the women's team of Laitonjam Jessica Chanu, Kangabam Kevashri Devi, Dekalu Th Panmei and Siddhika Huidrom took the second place in the women's 4x50m medley relay.

Manipur's three bronze medals in swimming came through efforts of Laikhuram Ricky Singh (men's 100m breastroke), Kangabam Kevashri Devi (women's 100m breastroke) and Sandham Punshipa Meitei (men's 100m butterfly).

In cycling, Thokchom Tennyson Singh won gold medal in the MTB downhill full suspension event while fellow Kshetrimayum Jack Singh settled for bronze medal.

Cyclist Pangambam Priya Devi bagged silver medal in the women's open XC and Haomon Urbashi Devi took bronze medal.

It was a heartbreak for Manipur in the team table tennis competition as both men's women's team fell to their Mizoram opponents in their respective final matches to settle for silver medals.

In taekwondo, Manipur claimed four bronze medals courtesy of RK Liokanta Singh and Pusiha Tolly Mangshatabam in individual events and pairs of RK Liokanta Singh-Konsam Ganga Rani Devi and Nongdaren Khaba-Soraisam Lamnganbi Chanu.
