Wrestlers, cyclists help Manipur topple Assam from top of medal tally

Imphal, November 15 2022: State wrestlers made a clean sweep of gold medals on offer on Tuesday while cyclists added two gold medals to help Manipur dislodge Assam from the top spot of the medal tally in the 2nd North East Olympic Games 2022 as both state archers and judokas ended their campaigns on a high note.

The state wrestlers' peerless form was on full display on Tuesday as they swept the board clinching all the five gold medals on offer in the day's competition.

Stellar performances by Khundrail Pam, Y Victor, S Heithoiba Meitei, Sh Binita and Holina Ningombam yielded five gold medals and propelled Manipur to the top of medal tally.

Manipur toppled Assam from the top of the medal table by collecting 221 medals including 78 gold, 71 silver and 72 bronze.

Assam dropped to second with 75 gold, 55 silver and 53 bronze medals while Arunachal Pradesh stayed third with 38 gold, 35 silver and 35 bronze medals.

Khundrail Pam outwrestled Vanlalruta of Mizoram in the final of the men's 65kg category to claim the gold medal as Nagaland's Kusayi and Meghalaya's Welford Alban shared the bronze.

Y Victor, on the other hand, made his mark in the men's 70kg category.

The state grappler defeated Kenei Selte of Nagaland in their gold-medal duel.

Dominic Zarzoanga of Mizoram and Jeffgary of Meghalaya took bronze medals.

S Heithoiba Meitei outdid Mhaneikholie of Nagaland to claim his yellow metal in the men's 74kg category as Assam's Albert Basumatary and Mizoram's K Vanhnuaithanga bagged bronze medals.

In the women's competition, Sh Binita beat Assam's Domoni Uzir to clinch the gold medal in the 55kg event while Holina Ningombam claimed the top podium honour in the women's 55kg category after defeating Chusen of Nagaland.

Meanwhile; the state cyclists left a strong impression of their prowess by claiming two more gold medals and a bronze on Tuesday to end their campaign on a high note as the cycling team secured the top spot in medal tally with five gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

The day's competition saw Konthoujam Bishan Singh and Naorem B Devi win gold medals for Manipur.

Bishan took his yellow metal after winning the men's open road cycling event while Naorem B Devi dominated the women's road cycling event where Thokchom Helen Devi settled for the bronze.

State archers and judokas also wrapped up their cam paigns emerging as the top finishers.

In archery, Manipur finished with eight gold, seven silver and four bronze to top the medal tally as Assam were runners-up with six gold, four silver and three bronze, followed by Arunachal Pradesh with two silver and one bronze.

In judo, the state team came out on top collecting 16 medals including seven gold, four silver and five bronze.

Arunachal finished behind with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals, followed by Tripura, who bagged two each of gold and silver, coupled with four bronze.
