Senapati, September 27 2024:
The third edition of the Lt Col Robert TA Memorial Badminton Tournament, organised by the Indian Army as part of Operation Sadbhavana, concluded on Friday with a fitting closing ceremony at the Rikhumai Taphou Indoor Badminton Hall in Senapati district, Manipur.
Held from September 23 to 27, 2024, the tournament was held in memory of late Lieutenant Colonel Robert TA, the first officer from the Maram Naga community to serve in the Indian Army.
Lt Col Robert was commissioned into the 3 Engineer Regiment in 2004 and tragically lost his life on May 14, 2020, during a snow clearance mission in North Sikkim, bravely leading his team through an avalanche.
Over five days, the event saw enthusiastic participation from 210 men and women across various age groups, engaging in over 170 matches across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles categories.
The closing ceremony featured the finals of the men's singles and women's doubles categories, attended by Chingpai Rangnamei, Lt Col Robert's wife, senior officers from the Indian Army, and other dignitaries.
After the matches, the winners were felicitated for their performances by the guests.
RS Abel, a founding member of the SDBA, mentioned in his speech that the association was established on November 3, 2001, initially comprising RK Graceson as secretary and SH Robert as finance secretary.
The primary aim of the association was to promote fitness and health among its members, though initially hindered by the lack of proper badminton facilities.
Upon the arrival of T Pamei, IAS, as the DC of Senapati district, efforts began to renovate and enhance the badminton courts within the Mini Stadium, Senapati.
Since its inception, the association has evolved into a robust body that has fostered numerous distinguished players at district, state, national, and even international levels.
Senapati district now boasts one of the largest badminton stadiums in the state, equipped with 12 courts.
With the active involvement of high-ranking officials and prominent personalities, the association continues to thrive, progressively improving each year and nurturing many renowned players.
The tournament received widespread appreciation from the local community as it offered young people and residents of Senapati district a platform to demonstrate their skills and sporting prowess.
