57th Mountain Division, CPI fete Mirabai Chanu

Imphal, August 06 2021: 57th Mountain Division, Leimakhong on Friday felicitated Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who won a silver medal for the country in women's weightlifting at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics-2020 .

Speaking during the felicitation programme, 57th Mountain Division GOC major general Navin Sachdeva noted that winning of a silver medal in the Olympics by Mirabai not only brought laurels to the country but also made to include India in the sports map of the world.

The strength shown by Mirabai in the Olympics has inspired girls across the country, he said and wished that she achieves gold in the next Olympics and brings more glory to Manipur and India.

In her address, Mirabai Chanu said that she faced many hardships in her journey to achieve the Olympics medal and conveyed gratitude to all who extended help in her journey to become an Olympic silver medallist.

She also affirmed not to be discouraged by failure to win the gold medal but instead work harder to win in several competitions and gold medal in the next Olympics.

57th Mountain Division paid respect to the Olympic medallist Mirabai by presenting gifts.

Later, a photo session with officers and personnel of the division and their family members was held.

CPI Manipur State Council also honoured Mirabai Chanu, who opened the medal account of the country at the Tokyo Games, by presenting simple gifts.

The party honoured the Olympian during a ceremony held at Ibudhou Khamlangba Shanglen near Mirabai's home at Nongpok Kakching wherein CPI national executive member Dr M Nara wished Mirabai success in all her future endeavours.

Manipur has produced several Olympians and stories of these prominent sports personalities must be spread to every nook and corner of the state so that more youngsters could be inspired to work harder and help in taking the sports sector and movement to newer heights, he said, adding that it indeed is appreciative of the government, private companies and individuals to encourage players by providing financial assistance.

The felicitation event was also attended by CPI Manipur State Council secretary L Sotinkumar and All Manipur Nupi Marup leaders and all of them presented gifts to Mirabai.
