38th National Games : Chinglemba Singh assured of a boxing medal; rowers, archers progress

Imphal, February 04 2025: State boxer Chinglemba assured himself at least a bronze medal as he made it to the semi-final of the men's 51 kg boxing event of the 38th National Games being hosted by Uttarakhand.

Chinglemba sealed a 5-2 split decision win against Md Arif of Jammu and Kashmir in an intense quarterfinal bout at Shri Hari Singh Thapa Sports College Indoor Stadium today to seal his semi-final berth.

The day also saw other boxers, rowers advancing to the next stage of their competition.

Boxer Shagolsem Bijeta Chanu also made her way to the quarter final of the 54 kg competition following the footsteps of compatriot Sovi Jajo (57 kg) and Thongam Kunjarani Devi (60kg category) .

Rowing Manipur women's rower have made it to the final of the 2000 meter Double Scull event with the pair of Thangjam Priya Devi and Haobijam Tendenthoi Devi touching the finishing line in 8 minutes and 2.7 seconds. Odisha and Maharashtra women rowers came second and third respectively.

The final will be held tomorrow.

Archer

It was a good day for State archers as L Rosina Devi entered the final round of the 50 metres Women's Individual event while Ch Nelson also advanced into the semi final round of the Men's Individual 50 metres event.

Rojina Devi will face a Chhatisgarh archer in the final round.

Cycling

Manipur trio of Laitonjam Ronaldo, Yanglem Rojit and Kh Rahul failed to make it to the final round of the Men's Team Sprint held this afternoon at Rudrapur Shivalik Velodrome despite topping the qualifying round.

Hockey

State men's hockey team kicked off their campaign in the games with a 3-3 draw with Madhya Pradesh at VK hockey stadium, Haridwar.

The goals for Manipur were scored by L Dipu Singh (10', 57') and Talem Priyobrata (17') .

MOA Media Committee chairman L Ibungochoubi said he was thrilled to see boys and girls qualify and play in the National Games long after the 1999 games that was hosted by Manipur.

"This indicates a strong feeling that the popularity of the game is gaining ground and we are able to reach far greater avenues.

We have produced so many renowned players including Olympians which clearly indicates our commitment to the game," Ibungochoubi said.

Speaking to MOA Media Team Olympian Chinglensana said, "We are very happy to feature in this 38th National Games.

Though we would very much like to get a good beginning in the opening game we managed 3-3 goals.

"We have felt the need for a longer practice session as many of our players have been playing for other clubs across the country.

Team combination is very crucial for a winning crusade.

But we enjoyed our game today and have definitely chalked out what we need to do better in the next match" .
