Imphal, January 13 2014 :
The Jiri Cup Invitation Football Tournament organised by the All Jiribam Sports Association, started off on the right note, with goals galore in the first match of the tournament decided under sudden death.
Tied 4 each during regulation time, PYC Phaitol ultimately got the better of Digir Youth Club in sudden death by 10 goals to 9 goals.
It was the Digir Youth Club which opened the account as early as the 8th minute of the match, when he outwitted the defence line of PYC and found the net.
Stung by the early goal, PYC went all out and launched a series of attacks.
The relentless onslaught finally paid off when Lentinsem found the net in the 19th minute to get the equaliser.
From there the match saw fortunes fluctuating from side to side, with Laldamriya of Digir YC bang on target in the 24th minute to take the lead again.
The one goal lead however did not last long as Thangboy of PYC capitalised on a defence lapse, controlled the ball neatly and rattled the net of Digir YC in the
26th minute.
Lentinsem of PYC then took things into his hand and scored two goals within a span of ten minutes in the 29th and 39th minute to help his team take a two goal lead.
Digir YC, went on the hunt with a purpose and after a couple of well co-ordinated moves found the net in the 43rd through James to reduce the margin.
After the lemon break, Digir YC put more men on the attack to find the equaliser and James rose to the occasion when he slotted home the ball in the 56th minute to get the equaliser.
With the two teams tied at four goals each, penalty kick was resorted to.
Here too, they were evenly matched as the two teams scored three times each, taking the game to sudden death.
PYC, Phaitol kept their nerves and managed to convert the three attempts, while Digir faltered at the last kick to lose by a whisker.
