Sunrise Youth Club (A) caused a major upset defeated defending champions Bachelor's Youth Welfare Club by 26 runs in a group A match on the opening day of the Pongal Cricket Tournament 2004 at RYC, ground Moreh today.
Replying to the Sunrise club total of 142 runs for seven wickets in the 30 over match, all the BYWC batsmen were scuttled out for 116 runs in the 24th over with Dharma Raj taking four wickets to dent the defending champion's run chase.
Man of the match Dharma Raj was well supported by bowling partner Manivanan who claimed three BYWA wickets.
Prasad top-scored for the winning side with 26 runs while Paresh and Praveen contributed 16 runs each.
The opening ceremony of the tournament being organised by Chandel District Cricket Assn was held, with Moreh SDPO K Tomba and CDCA vice president RK Surendra as chief guest and president respectively.
KBS Maniam graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
