National Games: Gold medal eludes State

After stupendous showing on the first four days of the 34th National Games, gold medal eluded Manipur on the fifth day of competition today consequently dropping to fourth place in the medals tally, behind Maharashtra, Services and Delhi.
While two bronze medals were added to the overnight tally by women rowers, Manipur men's and women's teams have entered the title round in sepaktakraw regu event competition with the eves recording 21-6, 21-13 win over Nagaland and the men's team defeating Mizoram 21-6, 21-11 in semifinal matches.
The bronze medals won today were bagged by S zingranphy and Kh Debala Devi in 500 metres coxless pair with the duo of Ch Priya and Th Chaoba Devi finishing third in 500 metres double scull event.
Football: Manipur completed their group engagements with a goalless draw against West Bengal in the women's football event of the National Games at JRD Tata Sports complex on Thursday.
Manipur, previous edition's runners-up, topped group B on the basis of better goal difference and will clash with Tamil Nadu in the semifinals on Friday.
The other semifinal will be between defending Champions Orissa and West Bengal.
Manipur had more possession of the ball and its defence, boasting internationals H Thoi Devi and L Asharani Devi, put up a good show as they handled Bengal counter-attack quite impressively, especially in the second half.
The players of the north-eastern side were aggressive and and kept attacking the rival goal-post but missed the target on four occasions.
In a Group A match in the morning, defending champions Orissa outclassed hosts Jharkhand 8-0 in their last group clash.
gymnastics: Maharashtra girls finished on top today (Feb 17) after bagging six gold medals in both the individual and team competitions of the Rhythmic Gymnastics event in the 34th National Games at the Khelgaon.
With 182.80 points, Maharashtra eves emerged on top, with Shate Akshata winning three gold medals to become the first gymnast in this National Games to claim three yellow metals.
After taking gold late on Wednesday night, Thursday also Akshata along with her statemate Kshipra Joshi won two gold medals each in their rhythmic events.
volleyball: Tamil Nadu came from behind to beat Kerala in men's volleyball final to win the gold medal in the 34th National Games at Khelgaon on Thursday.
After losing 19-25 in the first set, Tamil Nadu rallied to win the next three closely-fought sets taking them 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19 .
Haryana defeated Uttarakhand 25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 15-25 and 15-11 to take the bronze medal.
