Imphal, December 15 2011:
Despite Ashish Kumar of UP creating history in the Guangzhou Asian Games in 2010 by becoming the first Indian to win a medal (bronze) at the continental extravaganza, the indian federation is besieged in a crisis-like situation with the Govt disapproving election of Gymnastics Federation of India conducted on July 30, 2011 .
While Ashish Kumar re-kindled interest in gymnastics in India through his exploits at the Asian Games and before that at the Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi, where he had also won the bronze medal, the Federation has been directed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (Department of Sports) to hold fresh election.
In its directive to the Federation, the Govt of India also advised that all affairs of the Federation should be handled by the office bearers and executive committee of the Federation which was in office prior to holding the July election.
Consequently, the Federation notified that a meeting will be convened to deliberate on the directive as well as holding of fresh election.
