Fire burns office in Ukhrul

Imphal, January 27, 2011: Properties worth around Rs.1 lakh were destroyed when a fire raged through the office of the Western Educational Front Society at Ukhrul town today around 1 pm.

An official report said that a fire which started from burning debris and waste products at a dumping ground raged through the office aided by a strong wind.

Residents with the help of fire fighters doused the fire before it spread.

Chaos erupted when the fire-fighters arrived late and residents stoned the fire tender damaging the windshields.

Calm prevailed after the fire fighters convinced the residents of the area that they could not arrive in time because the fire tender's water pump developed a mechanical problem.

Almirahs and furniture inside the wooden structure were damaged by the fire, the report added.
