Presidency College celebrates 40th Foundation Day

Kangpokpi, February 23 2013 : Presidency College Motbung today celebrated its 40th Foundation day at the Jubilee Hall of the College, Motbung.

Ngamthang Haokip, Minister IFCD/Printing & Stationery, Govt of Manipur, Kh Devendra Singh, MLA 16-Sekmai AC and Dr T Gangte, Principal, Presidency College Motbung attended the celebration function as chief guest, guest of honour and functional president respectively.

Representatives of Motbung Village Authority, KSO-SH, TSA-SH and some renowned Kuki artistes also attended the function.

Ngamthang Haokip, Minister IFCD/Printing & Stationery, Govt of Manipur said that Presidency College was established particularly for all communities in Sadar Hills amidst difficulties and hurdles.

He appealed to the Students' Union to initiate effective steps for the overall betterment and development of the College.

He further urged the Students' Union to closely monitor the attendance of both the students and the teaching staff so as to ensure quality education while calling for an end to assume the college as a tools to gain certificates.

The Students' Union has also been urged to keep a close tab on any sanctioned scheme or amount for the College development and ensured whether such schemes were utilised accordingly and satisfactorily.

During the function the Students' Union, through a memorandum, urged the Minister to construct 10 separate toilet each for both boys and girls apart from persuading the Minister to provide text books for 3rd and 6th Semesters students.

While speaking at the occasion, Kh Devendra Singh, MLA 16-Sekmai AC lauded the college for producing two students who bring laurels in the national and international sporting events.

The MLA also assured to donate two computer sets to the college.

Dr T Gangte, Principal of the College pointed out that Presidency College Motbung is the only government college in Sadar Hills where all communities belonging to Kuki, Nagas, Nepalese and Meeteis come together and study.

While elaborating the College's objectives Dr Gangte said that the College teaching faculties do their best to mould the students in the wake of the rapid political and technological changes around the world.

She further said that in spite of lacks of infrastructure, the faculties of this College are no less than other government College in the State.

JK Biswas, Associate Professor while briefing the history of the College said that Henkholen Sitlhou with the help of Seikholam and Lunneh, chief of Motbung Village, Letpao, Thongkhochon and some intellectuals of the areas have laid the foundation of the College in 1970.It took them three years to set up the College in 1973.The College was affiliated to Gauhati University.

After Manipur University came into existence, the affiliation was transferred to Manipur University and the Govt.of Manipur took the College in the last part of the year 1978 .

Gurumayum Sonia, who won a Bronze medal in Inter College Fencing Championship 2013 at Punjab; Kh Sonia, who won Gold in International Fencing Championships 2012 at Bangkok, Thailand; Lungmonkim Sitlhou, who was crowned Miss Kut 2011 and M Gracy Kimhoithem who is the reining Miss Kut were honoured during the function.

Incumbent Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Th Lokeshwar and his better-half were alumni of the college.
