JNVGO urges Government to develop memorial site of Wangkhei Meiraba

Joint Non-Government Voluntary Organisation in association with People's Museum Kakching, Kakching Municipal Council, Student bodies, Justice Committee on Anglo Manipuri War 1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters ofKangleipak, Major Wangkhei Memorial Trust and Leishangthem Amu Memorial Trust organised a cleanliness drive today at Wangkhei Meiraba Poila memorial site located at Machin Manao Ching, Kakching.
During the cleanliness drive, People's Museum Kakching, Board of Trustees president, former MLA Yengkhom Surchandra said it is pity that no observance is being held under State Level to commemorate the late freedom fighters of Manipur who have sacrificed their live fighting for the motherland during the freedom struggle of 1891.He stated that the Government must also hold observance for Wangkhei Meiraba Poila and his army just like the Khongjom War observation which is being held every year.
Meanwhile, JNVGO president and secretary in a statement today urged the State Government to develop the memorial site of Wangkhei Meiraba Poila who sacrificed his life fighting for the motherland during the freedom struggle of 1891 .
It further stated that since 1989, under the support and joint initiative of Late Mayanglambam Gourachandra, founder of People's Museum Kakching and Late Dr Kh Sorojini, former director of Art & Culture in collaboration with different CSOs from time to time have been observing the remembrance day of the forgotten freedom fighters at their resting place located at Machin Manao Ching.
"It is due to their effort, the memorial site has been recognised under 'Manipur Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remain Act, 1976' by the Government on Feb 21, 2004", said JNVGO in a statement.
JNVGO further urged the Government to conduct demarcation at the earliest and developed the memorial site in recognition of their sacrifices and contributions to the freedom struggle.
