Bharat Nirman Campaign kicks off in Tamenglong

Tamenglong, May 17 2011:
A threeday long Public Information Campaign on the flagship programmes of the Central Government has begun from today at the Indoor Stadium of Tamenglong district headquarters.
Vice Chairman of Hill Area Committee (HAC) MLA Khangthuanang Panmei and Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong district K Panmei, IAS were respectively chief guest and president of the inaugural function of the campaign which was also attended by freedom fighter R.Taleping as guest of honour.
The campaign began with candle lighting, cutting of red ribbon and inspection of the stalls by the dignitaries.
As many as 16 exhibition stalls from Government Departments and Self Help Groups are participating in the campaign showcasing their activities and programmes taken up for the welfare of the people.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function MLA Khangthuanang Panmei said that Tamenglong district is known for its backwardness despite its potential in agriculture, horticulture, etc.
In the name of most backwardness district, a seminar was organized where Union Home Secretary GK Pillai Home himself attended and released development packages.
Despite this, why is the district still backward, he questioned.
One of the main reasons, he pointed out, may be due to lack of information about the steps taken up in the district.
The general publics are not aware of the development works that has taken place in the district.
Khangthuanang Panmei, who is also the local MLA and Vice chairman of HAC pointed out that village chairmen and social leaders have not complained even though the contractors may draw all development funds without executing the works.
He observed that Tamenglong district can be turned into a commercial centre as it is surrounded by Nagaland and Assam.
He also appealed to all participants of the campaign to pass the information and message about the campaign so that the development works being taken up in the district may be fully implemented.
In his address as guest of honour of the function, freedom fighter R Taleping said that there is no other love greater than what the Government of India has done for the people.
Under NREGS, the Government of India has made the people to work and provide wages for the same, he pointed out while urging all to march ahead towards peace building and development works in the region.
In his presidential address, Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong district K Panmei, IAS said that such awareness campaign is very important for the people of Tamenglong and pointed out that public involvement in the development works would help in implementation of developmental schemes from the grass root level fully.
He also called upon the all to participate in the campaign and get necessary information so that the development funds may be properly utilised.
Earlier, delivering the welcome address, MOC of PIB Imphal Premlata Loitam, explained that the main objective of the campaign is to create awareness among the public on the flagship programmes like NRHM, SSA and Mid-day Meal, NREGS, PMGSY, Rural Drinking Water Supply, Rural Housing (Indira Awaj Yojna), Right to Information Act, Rural Telephony, Total Sanitation Campaign, ICDS, etc.
