Imphal, November 11 2021:
The All Manipur Progressive Farm-ers' Association (AMPFA) has came out strongly against yesterday's incident where paddy stacks which were yet to be threshed were found burnt in a paddy field located at an adjoining place of Senjam Khunou, Senjam Chirang, Phumlou and Koutruk.
It may be noted that unthreshed paddy grown in around seven Sangams (local land unit) was reportedly found burnt yesterday morning leaving the farm owner and many others in shock.
AMPFA in a press release, said that the association condemned the incident in the strongest terms and expressed suspicion that the incident may be carried out the day before with careful planning.
This inhumane and appalling incident is not new in the State since similar cases were reported in the last few years, however, none of the perpetrators have been booked and no concrete actions have been taken up so far, the association said with regret and urged all concerned to do justice to the aggrieved family.
The association also further expressed that it is high time authorities concerned find out the root cause, be it personal enmity, land dispute between localities or heinous acts of some youths under the influence of intoxicants.
Rice cultivation is carried out mainly in valley portions which constitute only one-tenth of the total area and the State is fed with this rice and some quantity reaped in the hills, the association noted.
Rice cultivation involves a lot of deal and farmers have to invest time, money and physical effort in the hope that a good harvest would feed them for a year and help bear other expenses through the produce, it said.
The heinous act of burning such unthreshed paddy stacks is thus becoming a big challenge to all, specially farmers, the asso- ciation said while drawing the attention of the State Government to book the perpetrators and award befitting punishment so that similar incidents do not recur in the future.
It also appealed to the State Government to provide all possible forms of assistance to the victim family or household.
