Kamjong, May 10 2024:
The District Health Society Kamjong has kicked off a two-day free surgical camp at Community Health Centre (CHC) Kamjong today.
The free surgical camp is being conducted in collaboration with the All Tangkhul Medicos Association (ATMA) with the support of the District Administration Kamjong, said a statement.
Seeing the plight of the people of Kamjong who are unable to travel to Ukhrul/Imphal or to other tertiary hospitals for treatment due to high transportation and accommodation costs, CMO Kamjong Dr Lucy Duidang collaborated with ATMA to conduct the two-day free surgical camp.
It may be noted that CHC Kamjong does not have any surgeon or anaesthetist.
Speaking in this connection, ATMA president Dr Wormi Sharon, Assistant Professor of Surgery at JNIMS, said that fifteen doctors from ATMA including surgeons, gynaecologists and anaesthesiologists will render their services to communities with minimal to no medical facilities and conduct two peripheral medical camps and one surgical camp every year.
Highlighting the deplorable condition of health facilities in Kamjong district, he appealed to the authority concerned to upgrade CHC Kamjong to the status of a full-fledged hospital with adequate facilities and manpower.
So far, 45 minor surgeries have been conducted, including lipoma, cystic swelling, ganglion, com, chalazion eye, keloid, circumcision etc and four major surgeries, namely, one Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (TAH), two Appendisectomy and one Ovarian Cystectomy.
In addition, Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs are also being created for all the patients who underwent surgeries at the camp.
The CMO Kamjong team has extended their gratitude to the ATMA team members led by Dr Wormi Sharon and Kamjong DC Rangnamei Rang Peter.
CMO Kamjong also appealed to upgrade CHC Kamjong to a full-fledged district hospital.
It is worth mentioning that CHC Kamjong currently operates with only 4 doctors, one nurse and one Auxiliary Nursing Midwife (ANM) with no lab technician, microscopist, ophthalmic assistant and dental surgeon.
Meanwhile, with a population of approximately 53,716 and settling in an area of 2314 sq km spread across four blocks, Kamjong district has only one CHC, two PHCs and 19 subcenters.
These health centres have very limited human resources, facilities and infrastructure.
