Imphal, January 30:
Expressing solidarity to Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on a fast unto death agitation for more than six years to demand the repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from Manipur, street corner campaigns have been launched at various places along NH-39 from today.
During the campaign organised under the aegis of AFSPA Temshingnabi Chanu Sharmila Khongjang Shougat Nupi Lup, people shouted slogans against the draconian Army Act and urged all to save the life of Sharmila.
The places where the campaign has been launched along NH-39 include Koirengei Bazar, Sekmai Bazar, Motbung Bazar and Thangmeiband Road.
A woman activist who took part in the campaign categorically stated that political parties and politicians should not live under the impression that Manipuri womenfolk would remain engross in the preparation for the upcoming Assembly election.
People of Manipur should not be taken in by the false promises being made by the political parties to remove AFSPA from Manipur.
If these political parties have been really concerned about the welfare of State and its people, then why should Sharmila be continuing her struggle for the last six years now?, she questioned.
Another woman participant said Indian Constitution should respect and honour women instead of violating their rights.
Laws should be enacted so that women can live in society in peace and fearlessly.
