Imphal, March 02 2015:
Several NGOs have expressed strong disapproval against Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam's assertion that most of the bombs which exploded at Imphal in recent times were brought by widows and drug abusers.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here this afternoon, Joint Women Forum (JWF) secretary Ningombam Manbi remarked that the Deputy Chief Minister's statement made on the floor of Manipur Legislative Assembly on February 27 was condemnable.
Asking how many widows and drug abusers have been arrested for transporting explosives, Manbi asserted that it would not be correct to blame all widows and drug abusers for such criminal and anti-social activities.
The Deputy CMmust keep in mind that no woman wants to be a widow.
He must also not overlook the fact that many women widowed by the conflict situation, AFSPA and HIV/AIDS have been earning their daily livelihood by working as street vendors or daily wage earners, Manbi pointed out.
At the same time, it is highly questionable whether the Government has done anything substantial for the welfare of drug abusers and/or widows, she added.
