Imphal, February 01 2020:
Aggrieved by the failure of the con-cerned authority to complete the construction work of Yumnam Patlou bridge in time, Imphal-Saikul road was blocked today.
On account of a 24 hours bandh called by the Peace and Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) with effect from 6 am, there was no vehicular traffic on Imphal-Saikul road today.
Bandh supporters block-ed movement of people as well as vehicles at Pangei Keithel which also remained closed.
However, there was no report of any untoward incident.
Speaking about their agitation, PDCC secretary Th Hemjit said that they have been urging the Government repeatedly to complete the construction work of Yumnam Patlou bridge.
Under a work programme of PWD named 'Improvement of Imphal-Saikul Road', work order was issued to a contractor for con- struction of the Yumnam Patlou bridge in 2016, Hemjit said.
Even as the deadline for completing the bridge construction work was exten- ded twice, the construction work remains incomplete which has even led to fatalities, he said.
Later, concrete slabs were constructed recently as a way of repairing the bridge instead of constructing it anew.
Maintaining that the bridge should be constructed a new, the PDCC secretary urged the Government to take up necessary action against the engineers and contractors responsible for repairing the bridge in fraudulent manner.
