Issues of land degradation in North East India highlighted

Imphal, October 22 2021: The ICAR Lecture series no 32 on 'Issues on Land Degradation in North East India' by Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh,i Union Minister of State for Education and External Affairs was held today.

The live webcast was participated online by the Vice Chancellor, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Dr Anupam Mishra, Director of Instruction, Dr S Basanta Singh, Director of Extension Education, Dr Ph Ranjit Sharma and other staff members of CAU Headquarters, Imphal, said a press release issued by Public Relation & Media Management Cell, CAU, Imphal.

The live webcast was also witnessed by the Deans, faculties and staff of 13 constituent colleges under CAU, Imphal viz, COA Imphal, CV Sc AH Mizoram, CPGS Barapani, COF Tripura, CHF Pasighat, CCS Tura, CV Sc AH Jalukie, COH Thenzawl, COH Bermiok, COA Kyrdemkulai, COFT Imphal and COA Pasighat located in different Northeastern States.

It was also participated by Heads, senior scientists and staff members of six different Krishi Vigyan Kendras of CAU Imphal, viz.

KVK, Andro, Imphal, KVK, Aizawl, KVK, East Siang, KVK, South Garo Hills, KVK, East Garo Hills and KVK, Sepahijala, added the release.

The lecture is a part of 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' programme and during the lecture, Dr RK Ranjan Singh emphasized the problems of land degradation and the factors responsible, water usage and conservation policies, acidation of soil, heavy rainfall and faulty agricultural practices in the North East.

He added that according to the UN report, 30 percent global land area has been degraded resulting in loss of biological and economical productivity.

The Minister further spoke of NE States being organic and also emphasized the loss of biodiversity due to various factors and climate changes.

Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, secretary (DARE) & DG (ICAR) summarized the points and stressed that the water conservation and soil conservation policies need to be strengthened along with documentation of indigenous agricultural practices and traditional knowledge system of Northe'ast India, said the press release.
