Local bodies banish alleged drug dealer from Kangpokpi town
Source: The Sangai Express

Kangpokpi, January 17 2023: As part of its continuous and committed fight against drugs in the town, Kangpokpi local bodies banished a man along with his family from Kangpokpi town for allegedly selling contraband items today.

The man who was banished from the town for selling contraband drugs has been identified as Mangkholal Khongsai, son of Ngullen Khongsai, a resident of Ward No 7 .

His wife has been identified as Nengpi Khongsai.

It is worth recalling that on April 23 last year, the people of Kangpokpi took a firm resolution at a public meeting to make the town completely free of drugs and unanimously declared a "War on Drugs" not only in support of the Government's initiative under Chief Minister N Biren Singh but also to save the future Kangpokpi youths from the drug menace.

Since then Kangpokpi Youth Union (KYU) and Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization (KWWO) under the aegis of the Kangpokpi Town Committee have been leading the fight against drug menace in the town.

The KYU has been actively conducting sting operations based on inputs of drugs peddlers hanging around the town day and night leading to identification of the alleged drug seller.

Mangkholal Khongsai and his family were caught last year for their illegal business and the town committee ordered them to leave the town following which they left the town but re-settled again within a few months submitting that they had stopped their 'business' and would live normally as per the law of the town.

However, the KYU has been keeping a tight vigil on their movement and finally caught a man who disclosed that he had bought brown sugar from Mangkholal Khongsai at his Ward No 7 residence.

Following the evidence, the Kangpokpi Town Committee directed the KYU and KWWO to drive away Mangkholal Khongsai and his family from the town and they dislodged them today.

KWWO president, Hekim Hangshing said that following the public resolution of April 23 last year, a massive rally against drugs had also been organized to create awareness of the growing menace of drug abuse, specially among the youngsters in the town, and also to give a clear message to all the denizens of the town that any drug trafficking would not be tolerated in the town.

She pointed out that use, sale and supply of drugs in the town is fast becoming prevalent, specially among the youth, and its curse has destroyed scores of families in the town.

Hekim Hangshing said to all mothers of the town "We can either lay down and die with our children or we can stand up and fight".

KYU president Haolet Khongsai maintained that the problems of illegal drugs pose a serious threat to the future of society and the situation has taken an alarming turn in the district headquarters where a lot of youths, including minors have been taken into the custody of the Kangpokpi Youth Union over the past months for possession of drugs.

He also urged the people of Kangpokpi to take care of their children and not to let them fall prey to the drug menace as none will be spared if caught irrespective of their backgrounds as drug abuse has been identified to have diverse and devastating effects on the safety and progress of society.

He continued that drug abuse is not only shattering the lives of youth but also leading to disorder and chaos in society which lays the foundation for various types of dangerous crimes, and apart from its negative social effects, it had been associated with some other criminal behaviours such as gang formation, robbery and other social disturbances.

He also said that people should come out to cooperate with the town's civil bodies in the fight to root out the drug menace in the town and ensure a drug-free atmosphere.

Meanwhile, an alleged thief identified as Haominthang Hangshing, son of Lungkhosei Hangshing of Kangpokpi Ward No 7, who was involved in stealing pet animals like ducks, dogs, gas cylinders, gospel missionary box etc was caught by Kangpokpi Youth Union today and he was asked to leave the town within one week.
