Phijam Hemanjit (20) and Linthoingambi Hijam (17) were students who are suspected to have been abducted and killed by Kuki militants amid the ongoing violent conflict.
Phijam Hemanjit of Takyel Kolom Leikai and Linthoingambi Hijam of Sagolband Tera Tongbram Leikai went missing on July 6, 2023 .
Months later, pictures of the two students, one showing them alive in captivity of armed men and another of them lying "dead" on the ground surfaced on social media on September 25, 2023 .
While the Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested several suspects in connection with the case, the two students have not been traced yet.
It has not been confirmed whether the two students are alive or dead.
Notably, the families of the two students met with the Governor yesterday, and at the CM's Secretariat today, they urged the Security Advisor to trace them and retrieve their remains if they are dead.
Former MLA Ak Mirabai was with the families when they met the Security Advisor.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ak Mirabai said the families set July 24 as the deadline to trace the two missing students, and the Security Advisor has assured them of a response by July 20 .
She said the families also enquired about the progress of the case that has been registered by the CBI.
In case the two students are not traced by July 24, the families along with the people, civil society organisations and JAC, formed in connection with the case, may launch agitation, she said.
She said the JAC and the CSOs will decide on the future course of action after July 24 .
The violence since May 3, 2023 in Manipur has killed more than 220 persons and displaced more than 60,000 people.
