Ukhrul officers pledge transparency

Imphal, November 05 2009: With the objective to create awareness among people about different projects/programmes taken up/envisaged by the Government and make implementation of these projects/programmes transparent, a meeting of the district level officers was held at Phungyar community hall yesterday.

The meeting was organised by Phungyar SDO R Rang Peter with the support of Ukhrul DC N Ashok Kumar.

The meeting presided by DC Ashok Kumar was attended by district level officers of PWD, PHED, Agriculture, Health and other departments.

The meeting assumed much significance as it was held in the back-drop of people's complaints against lack of transparency and other irregularities while implementing projects and programmes.

SDO R Rang Peter said that the meeting would help in bringing the Government officials and people closer towards implementing development plans effectively.

With several top officials of different departments attending the meting, it provided a vital platform to interact with people directly and discuss non-implementation of development programmes and misuse of development funds.

The meeting helped in redressing to some extent the problem faced by people in coming to Ukhrul district Hqs from far off places to meet district officials which often did not materialise and inability to collect desired information, the SDO said.

Saying that this was the first meeting of district level officers in the entire state, he said that other districts may emulate and organise similar meetings.

DC Ashok Kumar said that the meeting was aimed at informing the people about the projects/programmes sanctioned for Ukhrul district and also to rope in people in implementing projects.

Although central sponsored schemes like NREGS, NRHM etc could not be implemented properly and successfully in the earlier phase, there has been great improvement since then, the DC said.

Instead of hurling criticisms among officials, they should extending suggestions among themselves, he exhorted.

The meeting had also an interaction session with the people during which they put across different questions to relevant officials.

The DC also instructed the officials to implement projects/programmes within stipulated periods.
