Mera Houchongba Festive Fair commences

A seven-day long Mera Houchongba Festive Fair 2014 being organized by District Handlooms & Textiles Office, Imphal East District began today at the training hall of Food Processing Unit at Porompat, Imphal East.
The inaugural function was attended by Toijam Rajen, Additional Director of Commerce & Industries as Chief Guest; P Meenakumari Devi, Officer on Special Duty (H/L) of District Handlooms & Textiles, Imphal East as President; Y Shantikumar Singh, Officer-in-Charge of NHDC Manipur; Sandeep P Thubrikar, Assistant Director (Weaving)/Officer-in-Charge of Weavers Service Centre, Imphal and Longjam Ratankumar, president of HERICOUN as Guests of Honor.
Speaking on the occasion, T Rajen asserted that the festive fair is being organized to commemorate the traditional Mera Houchongba festival and showcase different handloom products of the State which is quite popular for its unique style.
He said that weaving is a potential source of livelihood for many unemployed women of the State and underlined on the need for producing more new handloom products so as to export them to facilitate economy of the State.
