Imphal, November 02 2022: The Special Court NIA Manipur has remanded Khangembam Sanjoy @ Athoi (28) to judicial custody till November 16 .

Kh Sanjoy was arrested on charges that he had been actively working for a banned underground outfit by recruiting fresh cadres and raising funds for the organisation besides his involvement in other unlawful activities.

Hailing from Kumbi Sitapur Maning Leikai, he was formally arrested yesterday from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa after taking permission from the NIA Court on October 31 .

In the Court, the Chief Investigation Officer of the NIA submitted that the NIA Imphal Branch had re-registered an FIR case of Bishnupur police station against two persons (including Sanjoy) who were arrested while trying to pick up a lady for sending her to Moreh as a fresh recruit of an underground outfit.

The bid to recruit the woman was carried out following a direction of the publicity secretary of the outfit on June 24 last.

Further, the Chief Investigating Officer submitted that during interrogation, Sanjoy revealed that he was actively working for the banned underground outfit for the purpose of recruiting fresh cadres and raising funds.

He is closely associated with the prime accused of the case, the publicity secretary of the outfit.

Also, Sanjoy was recently arrested by the Lamlai police and by Imphal East Women Police under POCSO Act.

To complete the investigation, he was formally arrested yesterday from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa.

The jail authority has also provided history sheets of the accused and as per medical reports, he was receiving treatment at JNIMS Hospital, submitted the investigating officer.

Today morning, while he was under the NIA custody, Sanjoy complained about health issues.

He was immediately taken to the hospital and provided medical treatment.

The doctor of the hospital has advised a surgical operation, said the IO while praying for judicial custody of the accused.

The Court after hearing the submissions, remanded Sanjoy to judicial custody till November 16 .

It may be mentioned that from 2012 to 2022, Sanjoy has been arrested four times for his alleged ties with multiple underground outfits.

He was also slapped with NSA before his arrest on September 12 by the Imphal East Commando from Takhel village.

Later, the Imphal East Women police station formally arrested him along with co-accused identified as Leishangthem Khomei for allegedly raping a minor girl on gun point in Imphal East district.

He was remanded to judicial custody on September 22 in the case.

Notably, one of the banned underground outfits had recently announced capital punishment for Khangembam Sanjoy and co-accused Leishangthem Khomei for 'committing the heinous crime against the minor girl' .
