Zero garbage drive kicks off at Thangmeiband AC

Imphal, August 24 2010: Under the theme of 'My city is getting ready, sign up today', an awareness programme on 'Zero garbage campaign' has begun from today in Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency for the first time in Imphal Municipal area.

Organised under the joint aegis of Ward Organising Committee and IMC, the inaugural function of the awareness programme held at Hajarimayum Mandop, Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai was attended by MLA of Thangmeiband Assembly Constituency Radhabinod Koijam as chief guest and president of MEELAL Moirangthem Nongdalenkhomba Meetei as functional president.

Special Administrator of IMC Geetkumar, Executive Officer of IMC W Bhaktaraj Singh, Health Officer of IMC Dr Koijam Arunkanta, Scientist of Ecology and Environment Wing, Government of Manipur Brajakumar Singh and Consultant of AIR Imphal BB Sharma were also present at the occasion as guests of honour.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Radhabinod Koijam pointed out that to make our city neat and clean, we need to start cleaning up from our home and locality.

Throwing waste materials at road side, near our houses and inside the drainage, not only make our surrounding dirty but also make these places the breeding ground for diseases.

This will affect our health.

Observing that without the support and co-operation of the people IMC councillors, officers and MLAs alone would not be able to make the people to dispose their waste materials at proper places, Radhabinod noted that we all need to work together for keeping our city neat and clean.

Local clubs and women organisations can also played a major role in this regard.

The MLA informed that gathering that IMC has announced competition among the local clubs of the same ward in keeping their respective locality neat and clean and the top three winners would be awarded Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 7000 respectively.

The competition would also be held at the ward level where the top three winners will receive Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

The MLA further said that he had talked with the IMC for giving some incentives to women to encourage their participation in the campaign.

However, in case IMC does not agree to his proposal, then he would provide the incentive from his own pocket.

Special Administrator of IMC Geetkumar observed that Imphal city is the mirror of our State.

Manipuri people normally like to live neat and clean.

But due to increase of population, Imphal city has become one of the most dirtiest place.

He also called upon the people for support and co-operation in ensuring the success of Zero garbage campaign.

It is said that similar awareness programme would also be carried out in 81 other places of Imphal Municipality area.
