Imphal, June 23 2022:
Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that the fencing construction works on the disputed areas with Myanmar between BP 80 and 81 will be halted until the issue surrounding land ownership is resolved amicably.
Speaking to media persons at Khuman Lampak today, the Chief Minister continued that he had sent a formal letter to the Centre on the issue apart from apprising the same to the Union Home Secretary in a telephonic conversation yesterday.
Saying that the Union Home Secretary had agreed to stop the fencing construction, N Biren maintained that Centre will surely direct the same to the Chief Secretary soon.
The Chief Minister further stated that the project (border fencing) will resume once a team of the Home Ministry identifies the contested area along with officials of the neighbouring country (Myanmar) and rectify the issue.
Border issues are very sensitive and the Government doesn't take it lightly, N Biren added.
Notably, the United Committee Manipur (UCM) has been urging the State Government to stop the border fencing works along the Indo-Myanmar border as the committee feared that the land of Manipur would be lost if the project continues unabated.
The UCM also spearheaded a protest demonstration against the project on June 21 and June 22 last along with with student and CSO leaders.
