Blooming Wuyawon set to attract monsoon trekkers

For nature lovers who wish to trek and explore the beauty of the hills, trekking through Shingcha village located in Kamjong district to get a glimpse of the picturesque view of the blooming Wuyawon may just be what the doctor prescribed .
The pinkish rare flower, Wuyawon (Caulokaempferia secunda) found only at Shingcha village, starts to bloom from midweek of July and last till early August .
Wuyawon flourishes in isolation and her beauty was discovered and exposed to the outside world only after it was uploaded on the internet/social media by native village girls Mayophy and Philawon in 2015 .
Later, the beauty of the flower spread like wild fire across the State .
The flower is an acronym Wuya- hillock and Won-flower in Tangkhul dialect and apart from the beauty of the flower, the scenic landscape and the greenery of the hills offer a very refreshing sight to the visitors .
During a brief interaction, headman of Shingcha village, Somi said the villagers are preparing to host Wuyawon Day on July 22 inviting all the district level officers.
The day will be observed every year, he added .
Other than attracting people, the purpose of hosting Wuyawon Day is to include Shingcha village in the map of State tourist spots and also to promote tourism at the local level .
According to records, more than 400 persons visited Wuya Kachui in 2016, and the number of visitors is likely to increase this year .
Wuyawon flourishes within a periphery of 2 square kilometres of the hillock Wuya Kachui and blooms in bunches of about 2 feet or more covering the whole peak for 2 weeks during the monsoon .
Wuyawon blooms in three distinct colour-pinkish, light pinkish and reddish pink .
Shingcha village is located about 60 kilometres from Ukhrul town and is roughly 120 kilometres from Imphal .
Of course, trekkers who don’t want to miss the picturesque view of Wuya Kachui hillock should come with sleeping materials, boots, gum boots and canvass for putting up makeshift tent.
There is also a local Inn at the foothill .
One can take a glimpse of the picturesque view of the flower blooming majestically across the hills by paying Rs 10 as entry fee per head .
