Manipur State Museum foundation day observed

Imphal, September 23 2026: The 57th foundation day of the Manipur State Museum was observed today.

The programme was organised by the Department of Art and Culture at the museum premises.

An exhibition show-casing gold and silver ornaments and other items of historical significance was also held as part of the observance.

A journal titled Museum Chronicle-A : Chronicle of Major Programmes and Museum Activities 2023-2026 was also released on the occasion.

Addressing the function as the chief guest, Art and Culture Secretary Naorem Praveen said that the Manipur State Museum houses many items of historical significance, including artefacts that highlight historical relations between Manipur and China.

He said that the Government is working to establish a separate section for textiles at the museum, considering Manipur's rich tradition of handloom and handicrafts.

Praveen further said that gold and silver ornaments used in ancient times, which were collected from different parts of Manipur and preserved at the museum, are show- cased only on special occasions.

He said that museums play an important role in preserving the legacy of ancestors and passing it on to future generations.

The programme was also attended by Art and Culture retired Director Dr K Sobita.

She said that the Manipur State Museum houses artefacts that provide evidence of Manipur's history as an independent kingdom spanning thousands of years.

The programme was also attended by Manipur State Museum curator Mrinashree Mairenbam, State Election Commissioner M Joy, artistes and students among others.
