BJP protests food price rise, corruption

Imphal, February 21 2011: Denouncing failure of the present Government to control prices of essential commodities and demanding end of corrupt regimes, activists of Bharatiya Janata Party Manipur Pradesh today took out a rally and submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur Gurbachan Jagat.

For about 20 minutes a group of BJP workers and top functionaries of the party's state unit holding banners and placards congregated in front of the Raj Bhavan and raised slogans in protest against failure of the Government to check increase in prices of essential commodities.

Apart from demanding that the food prices should be brought down they also decried alleged indulgence of the Congress-led Government in both the Centre and Manipur in corrupt activities.

As there were no additional security force personnel other than those deployed as Raj Bhavan security, the protest continued uninterrupted.

After arrival of teams of State police five BJP activists were picked out to meet the Governor for handing over of the memorandum while the others were herded away from the location.

Prior to heading towards to the Raj Bhavan, a sit-in-demonstration was staged in from of the BJP office at Nityaipat Chuthek.

speaking to newspersons, BJP Manipur Pradesh president Sh Shantikumar Sharma iterated that the protest demonstration organised today was in continuation of the nation-wide agitation launched by the BJP to highlight plight of the common people in the aftermath of rise in prices of essential commodities, rampant corruption and failure to streamline the Public Distribution System.

He also informed that today's campaign marks the conclusion of the campaign in the State after similar agitations were organised in Thoubal and Wangoi areas.

Estimating that prices of essential commodities have increased three-fold in the recent past with the common public being the worst effected, shantikumar also charged the SPF Govt of lacking initiative to check food price.

Further accusing the State Govt of not only indulging in corruption but also patronising corrupt elements, the BJP leader decried that failure to streamline distribution of PDS items has multiplied problems of the common people.

alleging all-round failure of the Govt, he cited hoarding of essential commodities by traders, ongoing agitation by the teachers affecting normal academic atmosphere and instances of extra-judicial killing by security forces to substantiate his claims.
