Imphal, September 09 2024: Mental health activist Dr RK Lenin has stated that the rate of global suicide cases is higher among men than women.

He made the statement during a media interaction programme held in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day at Manipur Press Club today.

The interaction programme was jointly organised by AMWJU and Share and Care.

At the programme, Dr Lenin continued that the global suicide rate is higher among the youth in the 15 to 30 age bracket.

Reiterating that global suicide rate is higher among men than women though the rate of gender suicide attempts is higher among women, Dr Lenin added that at least one person commits suicide every 40 second across the globe while 20 attempt suicide in the same period.

Many cases of suicide went unreported in Manipur fearing social stigma so people think the rate of suicides is low in the State, he added.

People with suicidal tendency will exhibit behavioural changes before attempting to take his or her life, Dr Lenin said and added that family can play an important role in the prevention of suicide if they can identify the warning signs.

Dr Lenin also said that preventing suicide is a collective effort that requires the participation of everyone in society.

50 per cent of people who attempt suicide have mental health issue while 20 per cent of them have depressive disorder, he continued and added that suicide is among the leading causes of death in the world.

He also stated that academic stress is one of the biggest students commits or attempts suicides.
