Imphal, December 19 2014 :
Majority of the teachers posted in schools functioning under Autonomous District Councils are hill people but many of them do not like to stay in the hill districts.
This resulted in the unwanted practice of substitute teachers, asserted Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Tribal Affairs and Hills.
He was replying to MLA Th Shyamkumar's observation (call attention motion) that administrative activities of Mosken Government Junior Boys School located under Henglep sub-division have been paralysed.
There is no question of closing down the school.
The school has seven teachers and 40 students and it is functioning smoothly, said the Deputy Chief Minister.
The Government has been working to check the practice of employing the service of substitute teachers.
There are 944 schools and 7385 teachers under Autonomous District Councils.
The Government has also taken up a new initiative under which local youths would be given preference during appointment of teachers located in hill districts, Gaikhangam stated.
Even though majority of the teachers posted in hill districts are tribal people, they prefer to stay in the valley, he remarked.
Earlier, MLA Shyamkumar, quoting media reports, said that Mosken Junior Boys High School has been closed down as there is neither any teacher nor any student.
He said that a large number of children have been denied the opportunity of formal education due to absence of teachers at schools.
He also sought immediate attention of the Government towards schools located in hill districts which are in pathetic conditions.
