Imphal, October 15 2019:
As the drainage system of Imphal city is almost defunct, the system demands a thorough renovation.
Notably, due initiatives have been already launched to develop Imphal city and adjoining areas as a smart city.
As of now, Imphal city primarily refers to the area bound by Khoyathong in the North, Keishampt junction and Nityaipat Chuthek in South, Kanglapat in the East and Naga Nullah and Nambul River in the West.
The drainage system of Imphal city flows from the East and falls into Naga Nullah or Nambul River.
Different sections of drains which collectively constitute the drainage system are in a very bad shape and most of their concrete covers are broken.

As wastes including plastic wastes and plastic bottles are disposed into the drains through the broken concrete covers, the drains have been clogged at different points.
As a result, the main markets are flooded everytime there is rainfall lasting for a few hours.
When the market areas and their roads/lanes are flooded, considerable volume of filthy, waste materials are seen floating all over the market places thereby causing serious health hazards.
Drains which are in the poorest condition are those passing beside Nirmalabas High School, HDFC Bank, Major Khul, Kalibari etc.
Concrete covers of these drains which are connected to Naga Nullah are broken at different points.
At many points, there are no covers at all.
Sections of drains which do not have covers are filled with waste materials and most of these drains are totally blocked with waste materials at every corner.
As the drains have been blocked, water overflowing from them which are highly contaminated, filthy and stinky are often collected for days on the road passing between the Mahatma Gandhi's statue and HDFC Bank.
The situation demands immediate attention of both Imphal Municipal Corporation and MAHUD Department.
There are many other drains which have become almost defunct.
At the same time, there are many points within Khwairamband Keithel where waste materials are piled up without removing them for days.
All these disturbing situations need to be taken care of before the annual Manipur Sangai Festival kicks off.
