ECI rejects report of 'dissent'

Imphal, September 23 2026: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has refuted allegations that there is dissent within the body.

"Differing views and observations are a normal part of deliberation in any institution.

They are a part of the decision-making process before a final decision is taken.

Not only the three Commissioners, but every officer of the Commission is fully authorized to give his suggestions to the Commission for improving the electoral system," it said in a statement.

The ECI's statement came following a report by an English National newspaper which said two Election Commissioners "objected on record" several decisions taken by the poll body.

The ECI's top three officers are Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.

The report alleged that Sandhu and Joshi "objected on record" several decisions taken by the poll body allegedly without their knowledge.

Citing the report, Opposition parties have launched scathing attacks on the BJP and the poll body, accusing them of undermining democracy.

The ECI meanwhile stated that all its decisions have been unanimous.

In recent months, the Commission has taken numerous decisions, issued instructions, and undertaken many electoral reforms including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) across the country.

All these decisions are an outcome of the unanimous decisions of the full Commission in the past one year, said the ECI .

Any operational queries or inputs raised by Commission members during draft stages are part of standard administrative practice aimed at safeguarding voter rights.

The suggestions given by the Commissioners were for further improving the electoral processes, it added.
