Imphal, December 20 2024:
Imphal-Pangei road will remain closed until the Government starts proper construction of the dilapidated road.
Today too, Imphal-Pangei Road Joint Development Committee and Meira Paibis blocked the road at Khurai Salanthong.
Imphal-Pangei Road Joint Development Committee convenor Salam Ibopishak said that they submitted written appeals to Chief Minister N Biren, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam and CAF&PD Minister L Susindro on January 10, 2024 seeking proper construction of the dilapidated Imphal-Pangei road.
As the Government failed to construct the road, people settled along the road decided to close the road but one Executive Engineer of PWD came and an MoU was signed with Imphal-Pangei Road Joint Development Committee on April 28.As per the MoU, the road construction work should have started by June 15, Ibopishak said.
But the road has not been constructed till date except for filling up some potholes.
But rainfall and floods washed away all the filled up portions and now the potholes have grown even larger and deeper, he said.
After holding a meeting on December 8, the Imphal-Pangei Road Joint Development Committee submitted another written appeal to the State Government to start construction of Imphal-Pangei road by December 17 else the road will be closed.
As there was no positive response from the Government, the road was closed from December 17, Ibopishak said.
He said that the road will be reopened once the Government starts constructing the road.
Khurai Khunphamlen Leimarel Shintha Kanglup member Khundrakpam Shantibala said that the Imphal-Pangei Road Joint Development Committee is constituted by four clubs located between Khurai Lamlong and Khurai Heikrumakhong.
At a time when the committee has been blocking Imphal-Pangei road against the Government's prolonged failure to construct the road even after repeated appeals, the local clubs received a noticed from the office of SDC, Porompat saying that the structures built along the river bank starting from Khurai Lamlong bridge including Social Standard Club building, Arambam Samarendra's statue, Panchayat Ghar, community hall and crematoriums should be dismantled/removed.
However, the notice does not say anything about the structures built along the river bank from Lamlong to Salanthong.
It appears that the SDC's notice was politically motivated, Shantibala said before why some specific structures are being targeted selectively.
