Imphal, April 19 2023: Peeved over the non payment of salary for 19 months, guest faculties of Manipur University of Culture (MUC) launched an indefinite ceasework strike today.

The guest faculties staged a sit in protest at the campus of New Light Public School, Canchipur and made the announcement.

At the site, the protesters used placards which asked the authority to halt construction works at the varsity until the dues are cleared. Saying that the departments at the varsity need to function properly first before opening a foreign language course and additional departments, they urged the administrators to step down if they cannot perform their duty properly.

The protesters also sought the intervention of the State Government and the Department of Art and Culture to resolve their issue and in saving MUC.

The protest demonstration was organised by Manipur University of Culture Guest Faculties' Association (MUCGFA) .

Speaking to the media, president of the MUCGFA B Gopiromen Sharma who is a guest teacher at Sankirtan Department said that they have been taking classes despite not getting the salary in the larger interest of the students.

Saying that the number of students at MUC has increased considerably, he appealed to the administrators of the varsity to understand the plight of the guest teachers and do the needful.

Asking how long the guest faculties can continue their job without getting any payment, Gopiromen again urged all concerned to release their salary.

He said that the ceasework strike will continue until their demand is entertained.

Another guest teacher T Tilakchand said that the way in which they are being treated by the higher authority is disappointing.

Saying that they are finding it difficult to make ends meet for their families without the salary, he added that they were compelled to launch the strike by the indifference of the higher authority.

The higher authority must not hire other teachers to continue classes at the varsity, he demanded.

He further stated that the MUC altogether has 49 guest facilities of which 20 are casual and the remaining regular.

Earlier, the guest teachers were given only Rs 7000 though the rate must be Rs 500 for every class which accounts for Rs 25,000 every month on average as most of the teachers take two classes a day, he added.

Stating that the guest teachers are also given the same duty as the regular ones, Tilakchand appealed to all concerned to release their salary.
