Dujon's bail plea rejected

30-year-
old Maisnam Dujon has been
remanded to judicial custody
till January 29 in the alleged
brutal assault case on three
journalists and a caretaker of
Manipur Press Club today.
After spending five days
in the police custody, he was
produced before the Chief
Judicial Magistrate, Imphal
West under FIR No 9 (1)
2016 of Imphal police station
under Section 326 of IPC
(causing grievous hurt by
dangerous weapons) this af-
ternoon.
Maisnam Dujon (30) s/o
Kulachandra of Keisham-
thong Top Leirak was arrested
in the night of January 11 for
allegedly assaulting three jour-
nalists and a caretaker of Ma-
nipur Press Club at Keisham-
thong the same night.
A large number of wom-
enfolk from the localities of
the four journalists, the care-
taker and the accused gathered
near Cheirap Court complex
since morning after getting in-
formation about Dujan's
Court appearance.
A heated argument broke
out between the womenfolk
who came from the victims'
and accused localities at the
Court complex.
Dujon was brought to the
Court by a team of Imphal
police station under heavy
security.
Police prevented the wom-
enfolk from entering inside
the Court complex by closing
the main entrance gate.
During today's hearing,
the defence counsel pleaded
the Court to grant bail to the
accused while the victims'
counsel prayed for judicial
custody remand.
After hearing both the
sides, the Court sent Dujon to
judicial custody till January
29.
Womenfolk from the vic-
tims' localities while speaking
to reporters strongly condem-
ned the 'senseless' attack on
the journalists who have been
rendering service to the soci-
ety day and night.
Maintaining that it is unfortunate to blame the media persons that
they were drunk, they questioned whether anybody has the license
to attempt on the life of the persons who come to Keishamthong in
inebriated condition.
It may be mentioned that the incident happened on January
11 at around 9.30 pm when the three journalists and the
Manipur Press Club caretaker stopped at Keishamthong to
have pan.
Dujon suddenly appeared at the scene and allegedly
attacked them with a bamboo pole without any reason.
All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) publicity
secretary and The Sangai Express Staff Reporter
Athokpam Jiten, who was seriously injured in the incident,
is still undergoing treatment at JNIMS hospital.
Other persons who received injury in the attack were
AMWJU Standing Committee member and Poknapham Staff
Reporter Rajkumar Bullu, AMWJU Standing Committee
member and People's Chronicle Sub-Editor Sukham Nanda
and Manipur Press Club caretaker Lamabam Jasobanta.
