The Manipur University syndicate; which held an emergency meeting today, has decided to constitute a task force to examine the university's budget shortage and charges of misadministration.
The task force, to be led by the secretary, higher education, IS Laishram, includes the registrar, MU, RK Ranjan, and officials of the state finance department.
It will hold its first meeting tomorrow in Laishram's office.
The university syndicate also appealed to the Manipur University Teachers' Association, MUTA, to reconsider its decision to go on strike if the university vice chancellor, Prof H Tombi, does not resign by August 14.At the same time, it expressed appreciation of the issues raised by the teachers.
It has also advised the university administration to accelerate efforts to tackle the problems affecting the university.
It is learnt that it was also decided that the ban on promotion of teachers imposed recently will be lifted and process for promotion of teachers will be taken up soon.
In the meantime, the VC, Prof H Tombi, speaking to IFP over the telephone, maintained that the demand by the MUTA for his resignation was unreasonable.
Pointing out that the charges laid by the teachers' association were general charges and not specific charges, he said he alone cannot tackle the problems faced by the university without the involvement of the government.
He also questioned the demand for filling up of vacant posts, asking how it was supposed to happen when there was a salary problem.
