Imphal, April 07 2016:
Intensifying its campaign against engagement of non-local workers, who do not possess relevant documents, JCILPS has indefinitely banned construction works of JNIMS A-Block from today.
Speaking to reporters, JCILPS office secretary Jitendra Ningombam said that the ban was imposed as the work agencies concerned were found flouting Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act (1979) in engaging non-local workers.
He said that JCILPS volunteers conducted a special drive at the JNIMS A-Block to detect non-local workers who are not registered under the Act and who do not possess relevant documents.
He said that construction works at JNIMS A-Block are going on under two contractors/work agencies one portion under contractor W Inao and another portion under Simplex Company.
Of the 63 non-local workers engaged by W Inao, 42 workers have voter identity cards, he said and added that all the 11 workers engaged by Simplex Company were found possessing voter identity cards.
Jitendra further said that most of these workers are from Dugri (Assam), which is located close to Indo-Bangladesh border.
Jitendra further said that all of them would be handed over to Porompat police for proper verification.
Saying that Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act, 1979 was passed for the safety of workers, he urged the contractors and work agencies to abide by the Act while engaging workers.
He also said that contractors/work agencies may engage local workers to avoid disruption of construction works.
Possession of the license issued by the DC/authority concerned and registration of workers at State Labour Department are mandatory if the contractors wish to engage non-local workers, he said.
Jitendra further said that unchecked and unregulated influx of migrant workers has posed a serious threat to the indigenous people of the State.
As such, JCILPS has re-launched its drive to check unregulated entry of non-local workers, he said.
Volunteers of JCILPS Student and Women wings also took part in the drive.
