Imphal, August 10 2025:
The 14-day State Handloom Expo (Hathkargha Mela), organised by Manipur Handloom & Handicraft Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) under the sponsorship of Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textiles, concluded on Saturday at Panthoibi Arcade, Wangkhei.
In his address, MHHDCL general manager (administration) Th Basanta said that it is mandatory for weavers of the state to possess weaver ID and handloom mark as products tagged with the handloom mark will enable customers understand genuineness of the products and increase their popularity.
It is equally essential for weavers to possess an ID so as to participate in the handloom expo, which will provide them the platform for tagging the handloom mark while showcasing them, he said.
According to Basanta, weavers possessing Pehchan card or weaver ID have better chance of availing benefits of schemes launched by the ministry, adding that the ministry has given approval to the handloom directorate and the corporation to organise seven Melas in a year.
He further announced that selection of weavers for participation in the National Handloom Expo will now be made through interviews instead of a lottery.
