Senapati, August 10 2025:
Poumai Naga Women Union (PNM) on Saturday observed its 38th foundation anniversary at its Senapati town office under the theme "Nurturing Bonds, Shaping Future", reflecting on its journey, honouring bonds, and charting a path forward for the community.
Addressing the gathering, president P Delilah Pao recalled that PNM's strength was forged in the darkest days of their history.
In 1987, during the infamous Operation Bluebird, Poumai lands, homes, churches, and dignity came under attack; schools and churches dismantled, women forced child deliveries in the open under armed watch; and villagers, including the sick and elderly dragged away as porters and forced labourers.
Many were arrested, tortured, raped, and killed in Oinam and over 30 surrounding villages, recalled the president, stating that these were not just acts against individuals but an assault on identity, humanity, and collective spirit.
From the ashes of humiliation rose unity, leading to the formation of PNM, not out of hatred, but determination, she maintained.
"We stood together to protect dignity, defend human rights, and ensure no future generation of Poumai endure such atrocities," Delilah stated.
She said that the day's theme was a reminder that their work remains unfinished and urged the community to deepen bonds, bridge divides, and invest in the future, stressing that a strong future is nurtured daily through mutual respect, solidarity, and vision beyond self-interest.
"The pain of 1987 was real, but so is the strength we gained from it," she noted, calling for continued action in honour of the sacrifices made by past leaders.
"We honour them not only with words, but by carrying forward the values of unity, justice, and care for one another," she added, praying that future generations inherit a legacy of dignity, peace, and hope.
Naga People's Organisation president Kuba Peter, Poumai Naga Union president RB Pani, Mao Council president Joseph Adani, Senapati District Women's Association vice-secretary.
