Imphal, July 09 2024: World Meitei Council has accused the state government of preventing the Council executives from beefing the media at Manipur Press Club, on Tuesday.

In a statement, CEC-World Meitei Council secretary general Yambem Arun Meitei said that its functionaries were detained by the police while they were preparing to hold a press conference at Manipur Press Club.

The authorities not only detained members of the Council but also prohibited conduct of the press conference, a clear case of violation of freedom of speech and expression.

Meanwhile, the Council informed that Heikrujam Nabashyam has been appointed as chairman of WMC for the 2024-25 term during the committee's general conference held in Assam on February 17, 2024 .

He will serve the post until the next election, the statement added.
