Imphal, December 20 2024:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP to tender an apology for the alleged physical assault on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge by BJP MPs inside the Parliament complex.
State Congress party workers led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and MPCC president Keisham Meghachandra held banners and raised slogans during the protest demanding an apology from the Prime Minister for the alleged misconduct.
The Congress leaders started their demonstration by staging a sit-in protest inside Congress Bhavan.
They later marched up to Kangla western gate by holding banners and placards and continued the protest.
While one banner read that the Prime Minister should sack Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his alleged derogatory remarks on BR Ambedkar, the other demanded apology from BJP and the Prime Minister for the alleged physical assault on Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge by BJP MPs.
Speaking to the media, Okram Ibobi said that BJP and NDA MPs have been systematically undermining the Constitution and the very essence of democracy since it came to power.
Saying that MPs of NDA levelling baseless charges against Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge on the uproar in Parliament is unfortunate, he added that it is unconventional for the ruling MPs to stage a protest inside Parliament.
It is usual for the Opposition MPs to protest inside Parliament but MPs of the BJP and alliance partners staging a protest inside the House yesterday was embarrassing, Ibobi continued.
To whom were they (the ruling MPs) protesting, he asked.
Ibobi also said that ruling MPs throwing baseless charges and lodging police complaints against Congress leaders when it was them who misbehaved inside Parliament is unacceptable.
The Prime Minister should take up strict action against Amit Shah who is in-charge of law and order for the ruckus in Parliament, he demanded.
Deputy CLP leader K Ranjit, Congress chief whip Th Lokeshwar, ex Ministers and ex-MLAs also took part in the protest.
