Maibam Manojkumar, Special Judge, POCSO, Imphal East, sentenced a rape convict Yumnam Naocha to 12 years rigorous imprisonment today.
Yumnam Naocha was produced before the Court from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa for the sentence hearing today, after he was convicted by the same Court on November 26, on the rape of a minor in November, 2016.During the sentence hearing, the Special PP submitted that Yumnam Naocha was convicted under Section 6 of POCSO Act for committing aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a minor girl who was just 4 years old, which is a very serious offence, and prayed for awarding the convict with the maximum sentence or life imprisonment along with fine.
On the other hand, the defense counsel of the convict contended that the convict was just 21 years old at the time of the incident and a football player.
He has no past criminal records and his parents are aged, the counsel submitted, praying for awarding the minimum sentence.
After going through the materials on record and the submission of both parties, the Court sentenced Naocha to 12 years in jail.
The Court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 ruling that in default of payment of the said fine, he has to undergo another 6 months in jail.
It may be mentioned the trial against the convict began from mid 2017 after the IO of the case, RK Babina, Women Sub Inspector of Women PS, Imphal East, submitted the charge sheet before the Court.
